Around few weeks ago I decided to come back to blogging that I stopped right after the end of last year NaNoWriMo, now I’m coming back to let you know that I took a turn from my writing path to another subject – data science. The subject that I chose for my professional career. You may wonder why I haven’t pursue a standard way of becoming a writer, let me explain my point of view. So to defend myself I must admit that the thing that is holding me back from writing is the sentence I have found many years ago that really made me think about writing. The sentence is as follow: How vain is it to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live. This is what Thoreau said about writing. How can you ever write anything down after acknowledging this? I have difficulties. How I understand it is that first you need to get yourself a life and than you can reflect on it in the form of writing. So I decided to firstly “get myself a life” and still I can remember how it was difficult to write one year ago, it was really a huge undertaking what is more it was based-on-experience undertaking and here comes Orwell who said that: Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand. But what exactly do you mean by “getting yourself a life”, don’t you have one? Here comes cynical part of me and laugh out loud… Saying: are you even mature enough to drink alcohol or vote? Go to sleep at 7pm and don’t ask stupid questions. That’s what he says. So last week I have decided to begin my adult life.
I moved out from my parents home abroad (to make things easier) and started my Data Science studies. Here we come to the merits of this long talk – why data science? Each writer have some lenses that he can see world through and I wanted mine to be as wide as possible to see the whole big picture of the things I write about. I could have chosen pure mathematics but abstract models are not as tempting as insights from the reality – of course you need math and I am a modest follower of its laws but I am more grounded to the human part of science and here comes data science. I have decided to open a new category for data problems that I face be it on my studies or that I find interesting anyway. It might be a bit techie so I will try to split each post in this category into two parts short general intro for everybody and more techie for those interested in details.
